CASE EXAMPLE 1
Service Development Strategy for a multi-agency service
The Strategic Board of a multi-agency body commissioned Breda Flaherty and colleague Peter Mumford to design a 5 year + strategy for service development, and recommend priorities. We reviewed statistics, synthesised relevant policies, and interviewed key managers and professionals.

‘I am writing on behalf of the Strategic Board to thank you for all of the work carried out for the Strategic Board. The Board adopted the paper. We will be re-convening our group, and opening up for new membership. We will consider strategic priorities, and also review the existing sub-groups to establish and decide if further groups are required.’
Metropolitan Police Chairman of the Strategic Board

CASE EXAMPLE 2
Service Standards – National recommended standards for NHS HIV Services
The Medical Foundation for AIDS & Sexual Health (Medfash) commissioned Breda Flaherty and colleague Kate French to convene a national steering group and a number of parallel working groups to draft standards for NHS HIV services. Our work led to a series of drafts; Medfash subsequently edited and produced this first set of national standards for HIV treatment and care, published by the Department of Health in 2003.

‘Over time we expect the standards to play a pivotal part in the development and improvement of services for people with HIV’

Design services for learning and
development projects

BFA’s design service aims to pair our development expertise with clients who need to move forward more rapidly on their own in-house projects; we offer our expertise to in-house teams on such projects as:

  • Medical professionals as learners on management and change issues
  • Setting up an in-house Mentoring scheme, or Action Learning schemes
  • Designing Organisation development projects & plans

CASE EXAMPLE 1
Designing management teaching for Consultant Medical staff
Drawing on BFA’s extensive experience in leading medical staff development programmes, an HR Lead recently asked us to help re-design some management teaching for Consultants.

BFA offered design advice on Consultants learning styles’

  • Interest in research
  • Analysis and Questioning style
  • Speed of Learning

The HR team were able to re-design their programme, and begin implementation.

CASE EXAMPLE 2
Designing an in-house Mentoring scheme
BFA was commissioned to design and structure a peer mentoring scheme for primary care specialists, involving GPs, managers, nursing staff, and others.

We advised on the role and purpose of a scheme, confidentiality, & criteria for participation; we set standards for mentors, established Action Learning sets to support good mentoring practice, and ran workshops, conferences and training for mentors on the scheme for over 5 years.

‘My sessions with my mentor were invaluable, and I feel much happier and confident in my work’
‘The scheme was excellent, and extremely beneficial for my needs at that time’

CASE EXAMPLE 3
Designing an Organisation Development plan
Needing additional expertise in organisation development, and under time pressure, a HR Lead commissioned BFA to design and draft an O.D. plan for the organisation’s next 5 years.

We coached people about O.D. approaches, interviewed key leaders and staff, and drafted a plan to inter-link the OD needed on people, process, system, and stakeholder issues.

The Board adopted the OD Plan, which is now in Year 2 implementation
